Momentum-Excellence
Who We Are: Momentum strengthens childrens’ social and emotional development by engaging them in dance, music and performance. Our passionate team of talented teaching artists and musicians connect with more than 1,500 children each year promoting the development of life skills and deep joy through creative movement and performance. Founded in 2003 by Monica Kridler, the program is based on the nationally acclaimed teaching method originated by world famous dancer, Jacques d’Amboise. Momentum is proud to be entering its 19th year, having served more than 12,000 children since its inception.
What We Do: Momentum conducts dance classes during the school day with students in elementary schools throughout Franklin County with a focus on under-resourced neighborhoods. The program is an essential complement to traditional academic instruction allowing children to express themselves creatively and develop a sense of pride as they master and perform choreography. All classes emphasize “The Big Four: Work Hard, Do My Best, Never Give Up and Be Healthy!” The program culminates in grand spring performances featuring more than 1,000 children. Additional offerings include a Community Performance Troupe, Early Learners Program, Advanced Teams, and a two-week summer intensive.
Why We’re Important: Momentum empowers children through dance, music and performance contributing to a spiral of success. Participants are among the community’s most vulnerable who face a myriad of challenges and often have limited access to arts education. Program goals are to enable children to develop self-discipline, perseverance, empathy, and resilience. Parents and teachers report increased self-confidence and the development of healthy habits. Reactions from recent dancers include: “When I started Momentum, my whole world got brighter.” “Momentum has taught me how to act better towards others.”
How We Impact the Community: Momentum inspires children towards excellence endowing them with skills essential for personal and academic success. Our programs create a shared experience among students and their classroom teachers and are considered an integral part of the school culture. For children experiencing trauma and complex emotions, Momentum is a passport to the deepest part of the brain where self-regulation is increased. As noted by a long-time donor, “Momentum is a gift to so many children and will impact them throughout their lifetimes."
How You Can Help: Momentum relies on the generosity of individual, foundation, and corporate support in order to make our programs accessible to children of all socio-economic backgrounds. As schools place greater emphasis on social and emotional learning, the demand for Momentum programs is high. External funding enables us to reach more children in under-resourced neighborhoods. Momentum also welcomes volunteers for our year-end performances providing support and encouragement to all of our dancers. Through time or treasure, investing in Momentum is investing in the children of central Ohio.
