PASSIONATE PURSUITS: OENOPHILIA

Written by Amelia Jeffers

The “new normals” of living through a pandemic mostly involve adjusting life inward, smaller, and simpler. Now more than ever, finding or reviving a creative outlet and hobby that fuels your passion is an important tool to maintaining peace and joy. Over the next six issues, join us as we explore opportunities to develop your new or neglected recreational pursuits.

Whether you casually imbibe or feverishly collect, the world of wine collecting holds nearly limitless possibilities - even in a pandemic. Online resources include wine clubs, tastings, and communities that provide ample ways to expand your knowledge of grapes, as well as guidance for purchase and storage. Locally, wine bistros and shops continue to welcome guests while following strict health guidelines, and many have expanded services to accommodate those who are less comfortable with in-person experiences. Check out a few of our favorite resources to fuel your passion.

Online

Winespectator.com Wine Spectator magazine is best known for its reliable ratings, but the 45 year old publication is in its prime with online forums, Wine School, and how-tos for everything from storage to buying at auction.

Winemag.com The online home of Wine Enthusiast magazine, this site offers extensive reviews and industry news, a large library of articles on wine basics, as well as an entertaining podcast for those who like to listen on the run.

Virtual Wine Tastings There is no shortage of virtual wine tastings hosted by wineries, distributors, and restaurants. But, if you are feeling adventurous, you could round up a group of like-minded friends and use virtualwithus.com who pairs private virtual wine tastings with out-of-work sommeliers.

Local

Hausfrau Haven (German Village) Opened in 1972, Hausfrau is not only the largest wine boutique in town, but the only retailer locally to cellar older and rare wines. Known to stand behind her motto of “If we don’t have it – we can get it!”, owner Faye Muncie personally advises collectors and clubs throughout the Capital City.

Meza Wine Shop (Westerville) During the pandemic, Meza Wine Shop introduced a wine and cheese box delivery service and curbside pickup. Additionally, their monthly wine club offers 8 different tiers to best suit any type of oenophile.

House Wine (Worthington) House Wine offers a 2-tiered monthly wine club. Their House Club offers two curated wines each month, while their Cellar Club offers two bottles of red each month. House Wine also holds both virtual and in-store tasting sessions every Thursday.

Gentile’s (Grandview) In the business for over 50 years, Gentile’s selection is one of Columbus’ best. But they offer more than just bottles: Gentile’s offers home winemaking equipment for those looking to take the next step in their passion.
